You'll eventually get what you pay for with TDK, so caveat emptor

I had so many bad experiences with Memorex cassette tapes that I just hate that brand. TDK has been pretty good so far.I would stay away from the ultra-cheap (pricewise) no-name stuff you may see at some discount stores. They are ususally junk - you will have lots of errors that result in skips, missing data and burns that just don't work. Otherwise, I would buy whatever brand is on sale that I trust.
And like Mac, I would challenge anyone to tell the difference between 192 and 128 bit rates.

Actually it's funny because the brand names don't mean much. TDK, Memorex, Fuji et al use different suppliers for different grades of CD-Rs, but almost none of them are made in-house. There are only a few companies that actually make the CD-Rs, and the name brands buy 'em and badge 'em. So each company is selling CD-Rs that came from maybe 3 different factories, and conversely there are some grades of TDK, Memorex etc. that are *exactly* the same thing.
There's some info about this on hydrogenaudio.org, here:

Scroll down to the post about CD-R media. Supposedly the best CD-Rs are made by Taiyo Yuden, the only Japanese manufacturer of CD-R media. So if you are really really neurotic (like the folks on hydrogenaudio.org
then buy CD-Rs that are "Made in Japan". They may not last any longer, but they might make you feel better

Peter,
You're absolutely correct that most manufacturers rebrand someone else's CDs. As part of my job/career from the past, I had to keep up on which houses were doing the manufacturing for what companies... Memorex always used a quality house, which is why they were always ranked with the others winners (or at least upper midrange). There are better makes that average less BREs, but Memorex is always easy to find on the shelf.
I'll see if I can't dig up my most recent list and give some names...
