why is my system distorting?
ok so i have a nice 50x4 pioneer head unit (will get new one soon also 2 nice infinities for front speakers also a cd changer. so if try to turn it up to level 16 or so it starts distorting......why? cant my speaker handle the power lol or maybe its that the speaker needs more power? an amp would solve this?
are you running stock speakers? if so then THAT is your problem! those stock paper cones can't handle crap for power before coming apart. so be prepared, new speakers then you'll want a seperate amp. welcome to the bug!
where are you at? we have a car toys here, just curious if you're local

Infinitys are a little power hungry but I like mine a lot (and I like my Pioneer too). Your Pioneer HU is 50W x 4 peak, I bet, so it is about 20-22 WRMS. It will be OK, but it will distort some as you turn it up for top down driving. An amp will keep the audio clean at higher levels, plus it will give the Infinitys the power they want to see. Once the speakers are in, give the system a listen, then decide. But I think you may opt for an amp.

yeh thanks, the people at car toys was like get new speakers infinits are nto good they are worn down, i was like wtf you didnt even hear them!! I mean its clear sound up to i guess maybe 18 out of 25. Yeh i order an eclipse 4 channel amp, lucid high end rear speakers and probably an a lpine head unit around 280.
If it is clear up to 18-25 (assuming that is close to max volume), that is probably just the amp in the HU. If you want clear sound at high volumes, without killing the bass, you will probably need an external amp. On my Alpine, if I get above 22-25 with my typical bass settings, the fronts and rears distort something fierce. How old are the speakers?

They need more power. Period. Your HU is not feeding them 50 watts of power... maybe... maybe... 20watts RMS. They want more power. Just get yourself that amp and it will clear up your problem.
