Wiring and/or Amp issue
Hey everyone,
I just installed my amp and speakers over the last few days (along with mat and ensolite). Before I put my carpet and everything back in, I tested the system, and everything sounded great. Put the carpet back, panels back on, etc.
Now I don't have sound on the left side and the amp turns on and off almost like a pulse. This doesn't happen as much with the volume down, but as I turn it up, it gets to be on for a split second, off for a split second. It was not doing this before I put the carpet back down and put panels back. I did have to unhook the amp to get the wires through the carpet and I had to mount the crossovers in the door. What are your thoughts on what could be causing this, so I can minimize what I have to take apart again.
My thoughts/hope (I'm not an audio expert) is that maybe a wire came loose from the left side crossover causing no sound and maybe it is touching another wire on that side causing the amp to go into protect when it catches it. I don't know if that makes sense. That would mean that I only have to take one door panel off, though, so that's why I'm hoping for that. Any other thoughts would be welcome.
Thanks!
Greg

your thoughts on the wiring are reasonable, it does seem like a short.
the best way to troubleshoot is to keep eliminating variables
until you find your problem. I' disconnect the bad speaker at the amp,
then test to make sure your on/off problem is gone - now you know it's
on that side, not multiple problems. then connect the good speaker
to the bad side of the amp, and make sure you still have no problem -
now you've likely eliminated the amp as a problem. then pull off your
door panel and check the connections - if nothing obviously wrong you'll
need to get a multimeter and do some electrical testing to narrow down
if it's the wire, xover, or speaker.
On the other hand, if after the 1st test it doesn't seem to be a speaker
problem, start unplugging/switching RCAs to see if the problem is before
the amp.

oth, that was great troubleshooting advice, and I found out I was right. A wire must have come loose from the crossover when I was reinstalling it. I love the sound of my CDTs, but their crossover connections leave a lot to be desired.
Now I have another issue, but I'll see if I can solve that on my own.
