actually IR can have indirect line of sight and still work, i.e. you can bounce IR off a surface and return. my guess is the IR is bouncing off the radio door and hitting the receiver.
my old stereo in college did this, it made controlling it easy, i could aim it at the opposite wall to control it.

The IR emitter is actually below the vent. Basically if you go up from the alpine trim ring, right above the IR receiver on the alpine unit is were I drilled my hole for the IR. I know the picture I provided was not to clear. I will try and get a better picture this weekend.
At the same time I want to try and get some better pictures of my system. Once I do that I will post them to the thread.
