I just had this issue a couple days ago. I have a modern laptop with a usb-serial adapter. I installed all the drivers but still coudlnt get it to link. For me it was very simple. Im assuming the series 2 still has a serial port correct, or is it usb? When you go into the ems software you have to choose which type of connection your using. I thought since it was a usb adapter that i needed it set as a usb, but i was wrong. It still needed to have serial chosen. Then when you hit serial you need to choose which port or COM that the adapter is set to. Then mine worked fine. Are you using an adapter or just a straight serial cable?

If you open aem pro, click on the ecu tab and then select connection port. That will let you choose usb or serial. If your gonna use the adapter you need to make sure your comp is recognizing it. Plug it in and make sure the drivers are installed. Then go to control panel and then device manager. You should see something that says port(com), but youll only see it if the adapter is pluged in. If you click on it it should hopefully have a name which is usually the name of the driver followed by the com number i think. If it says something like usb2.0 and has a wierd yellow symbol then the driver isnt installed correctly. Either way once thats on you can open aem pro and go to connection port and click serial, then select the drop down and you should hopefully see the adapter listed.

thanks,
i am still trying to get it connected, been real busy but i am trying all the trouble shoot methods today. i have installed the Aem tuner on my friends computer hopefully it works it's reading the usb plug once i plug it in to the laptop. i am running the serial cable to a usb adapter then to the computer. Every time i try to connect to the ecu it says "cannot open COM Port please make sure no other program is accessing the same Com Port
AEMTuner cannot connect to ECU. Please make sure that the ECU is powered on and check the connection cables."
