Default AEM serial datastream gauge

I've been looking at the AEM serial datastream gauge:

http://www.aemelectronics.com/serial...ream-gauge-756

What I can't figure out is how you know what the gauge is currently displaying? I thought maybe as you cycle through the displays the numeric display shows something like "RPM" as you switch to RPM but that wouldn't even work because the display doesn't have diagonal segments for alpha numeric display.

Does anyone know how this gauge works and how you know which output you are currently viewing?
