Default Converting a 06+ DBW S2000 F20C engine to cable throttle

Hiya Guys

Hope you are all well :0) Just after a bit of advice regarding converting a 06+ S2000 engine DBW model to cable throttle.

I purchased a Westfield S2000 started kit (http://westfield-sportscars.co.uk/we...-s2000-review/) which I’m currently in the progress of building. I have also purchased a 2008 Honda S2000 F20C engine which utilises a DBW throttle and come complete with loom etc. My reason being it was becoming increasingly difficult to come by low mileage AP1 engines and the AP2 engine I purchased was in fantastic condition with under 7k miles, so couldn't resist.

I was originally under the impression that to make it compatible with the Westfield S2000 cable throttle, would just be a case of purchasing
throttle bodies in conjunction with a stand alone ECU and engine wiring harness.

However, after discussing this on the Westfield forum (http://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/index....2#entry1277878) I have since learned that there are several differences between the pre drive by wire 99-05 F20C engines and the 06+ DBW F20C engines. As far as I can gather, the 06+ engines have the following differences:

1. 06+ F20C engines only use 1x cam sensor whereas the 99-05 uses 2x cam sensors

2. The 06+ cars have a crank trigger wheel with 12 equally spaced teeth, +1 extra. The 99-05 F20C engines have just 12 equally spaced teeth.

3. The 99-05 intake and exhaust cams both have 3 teeth trigger wheels. The 06+ cams have one cam with 3 teeth and the other with 4 equally spaced teeth +1 extra.

4. The 06+ F20C engine has no Air control valve on the intake manifold and no air injection port for the air pump function on the cylinder head.

Apart from utilising different Cam and Crank sensors, these are the only differences I can find.

My question is, what exactly would I need to do to get my engine working with a stand alone ECU and throttle bodies. Do I need to change the crank and cam trigger wheels, cam cover and matching sensors etc or would a stand alone ECU be able to work with these differences without modification.

Any help and advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated as feel a tad out of my depth on the subject.

Kind Regards

Chris(UK)

The DBW throttle is still cable driven. Mechanical cable to a box (the accelerator sensor) under the hood where cable motion is converted to electrical, sent to the ECU, and the ECU then sends voltage to the throttle body where it's translated into rotational motion again. (!) Any reason to not use the Honda AP1 DBW ECU?

A decent aftermarket ECU should know about the AP1 DBW throttle as well.

Note there are two different DBW ECUs for the US (AP2) and EU/UK (AP1) DBW cars. You can find the part numbers on the FlashPro website.

I'd do this in stages and keep the engine as stock as possible. No need for non-OEM throttle body(ies) I can see. At least not right away.

Let us know how this works out. I've always been a fan of the Seven and an S2000 powered one seems a great combination.

If you keep stock intake manifold the easiest and cheapest solution would be to get Hondata Flashpro to tune and maybe keep the stock ecu happy.
I'm guessing it could be problematic to keep all peripheral stuff though.
With that said I think most aftermarket ecu's could be configured to run the newer cam and crank sensors, I remember reading a vendor here (scienceofspeed.com) claiming that at least AEM would work.

I got a pre-facelift AP1 myself and I'm using the new single cam sensor, crank and trigger wheels.
This is with a Hondata K-pro ecu so that would also be an alternative, it's pretty expensive though but if you need OBD and working emissions testing it's pretty much the only alternative.

Hiya Chuck & Flanders, thanks for the replys :0) Good to hear that you got your AP1 working fine with the newer AP2 single cam sensor & trigger wheels as didnt want to have to change these unless I really had to lol

The Westfield S2000 kit is suppose to only be compatible with 99-05 F20C engines which utilise cable throttle. You then use a preconfigured Omex 630 ECU & send off your loom to Omex to be moddified which is then plug & play.

I was hoping that merely changing to a 99-05 intake manifold & throttle or Throttle Boddies would do the trick. But having read another build thread where someone used a F20C head with a F22C short block, the Omex 630 wasnt compatible with the newer trigger wheels etc So was curious to see what my options were and best course of action to take to get the engine working in the westie :0)
