Default Engine Swap Question.

Please let me know if this is off topic.

Ive got an 06 with roughly 150k miles, spun a bearing and the crank is smoked. i believe the block is still salvageable but i decided to buy a 100k mile 06 engine/tranny/harness/driveshaft. its got all the accessories on the engine.

When i previously bought my 06. I was told it had a HONDATA tune....? that vtec was lowered 1k rpm than factory. I do not have the hondata tune box... i bought the 06 engine because i did not want to go thru the hassle of having to change out trigger wheels and sensors on the engine.. my question is. will i have any issues with my ECU? how do i know if it even has a hondata tune.. when i did drive it around. it did seem to engage vtec earlier than a buddies s2k.. im worried that the car possible may not start? because of immobilizer? or having a hondata tune. by all means im no expert mechanic.. hence why im asking.

if anyone could shed some light on this topic. im more than willing to give any more information needed... Atm i am waiting for my engine mounts to get here so i can start to process and find out myself.. but ive got 5 days till then. so i decided to ask you guy for a little help!

No two engines are the same and considering you have no idea what sort of tune you have on there, getting it re-tuned or flashed back to stock is probably a good idea. You will need the Hondata Flashpro or other ECU interface tool to view/change the tune. Or find someone local to reflash/retune for you.

The immobilizer is a pairing between the ECU and key(s). Swapping out the engine should not affect this.

Thanks ZZe. so i also posted on my local S2k Group. there might be a possibility that the previous owner might of sent the Ecu to get it tuned. and shipped back to him.. upon hearing that. i went to their(hondata) website.. it seems like they do get ecu shipped to them and tuned. they also had this form, which i will post here.. the link at least .

https://www.hondata.com/downloads/ecu_reflash_form.pdf

from the form it looks like i can possibility send them my ecu? and revert back to STOCK.. thats if it has a tune... im not 100% yet this is just what i am finding atm.. i am most likely going to give them a phone call. any input on these fellas? ill take any criticism/feedback

You should easily be able to determine VTEC engagement rpm. 6000 is OE. Try 3d gear as the tach and speedo are a close match. VTEC at 60mph would be OE. Exhaust note should change and VTEC Yo! effect should be evident. You can also confirm the rev limiter (yeah, it's scary the first time!). If it has the very mild Hondata tune shown on the linked .PDF (F22 (8500 rev limit/5600 VTEC)) I don't anticipate any issues with the "new" engine and "old" ECU. All the linked tune seems capable of is reaching 60mph in 2d gear for an "improved" 0-60 time as only one shift is needed.

If the car was FlashPro tuned the previous owner may have returned the car to stock tune so he could sell the FlashPro itself as it has to be "unlocked" from the car to be useful to anyone else. A conservation with the previous owner would be beneficial.

Appreciate it chuck. After reading alot of threads and talking to a local tuner. i donnt anticipate for there to be an issue upon start up. although.. i would like to change this back to stock. and just have self peace of mind.. i wil be calling hondata tomorrow morning and seeing if i can veryify thru a serial number thru them. if not.. push come to shove i may just get another 06 ecu and immobilizer with key.

I've been running a 3600rpm VTEC in my '06 for coming up 5 years. Gernby FlashPro tune in 2015. So far, so good! With guys running 500hp in this car I'm not concerned about reliability. My sample of one (1).

Thanks Chuck!!

So after trying to get a hold of hondata over the phone, because of the covid. They have lower staff capacity and are only responding by Email.

i was told my ecu had a toda reflash and was able to be reformatted back to stock, all i had to do is fill out their form, send them a cashier check and the ecu. and id get it back within a week. My concern was that it might be a problem on first attempt to start the engine(w/ the tune).

anyways. ill be droping the engine tomorrow or the day after and will let you guys know if it starts and all. thanks!

There are over a dozen canned calibrations * included with the FlashPro software including one labelled "S2000 US-6 Toda" (it's the 6th on the list). An internal note in the calibration specifies "Toda header." There is also what I'm guessing is the same "factory" ("S2000 US-1) calibration in the software you'll get if you send your ECU, so if you purchase your own FlashPro hardware you can return to stock yourself without the hassle of sending the ECU, key, and immobilizer (wherever that is) to Hondata. Of course a FlashPro is $600 and the return to "stock" is only $100 but having the FlashPro will allow tuning the car which with only the substitution of a high flow cat will allow a 3600rpm VTEC and the attendant significant increase in mid range power.

You can download the FlashPro software (I just updated mine minutes ago) and see the furnished calibrations without connecting to the FlashPro hardware. My FlashPro is only about 30 feet away but my office is above my garage where the car sits and the FlashPro is in the tool chest.

* Several calibrations seem to be for injector sizes. The ones labeled "Tuned" and "Tuned-CARB" I'm guessing are very conservative and will work right out of the box. Note the operative word: guessing.

It's hard to overstate the way my Gernby-FlashPro tune transformed my car.
