700whp or Bust
Ok, here we go, let's say I found the limits of pump gas + meth, lol.
Strapped on that afternoon, weather was perfect. Car made the same power, at the same boost levels as before. Keep in mind this was strictly a retune, had a few glitches last time I wanted corrected. While I was there, I wanted to make some more power.
Through the 3 different boost levels, same as before we made. 450/550/650. We hit ~650whp pretty quickly once we got it dialed back in. Changed a few minor things, wired in a meth fail safe, didn't get that done last time and setup boost feedback. This time around I wanted to get boost by gear working, in the past I've used a switch to trigger boost output. Anyway.
We hit 650, and saw our first knock count. Ever so slight, but it was there. With timing already ultra-conservative, we figured this was the limit of my nozzle.
Decided to pull the 500cc nozzle and drill it over a little, to see if we could squeeze out a little more flow. Drilled it just a little, put it back on, made another pull and that was all she wrote.
Cyl 1 was fine. Cyl 2, 3, 4 were all progressively worse. I believe since it's not a direct port system ( more like a nitrous single fogger) cyl 1 sucked up the majority of the meth/water and 2, 3, 4 were left with hotter temps and slowly worked the motor.
It made the pull with less boost and less power. Came down to idle and the sound changed. I quickly listened to see where it was from, and we saw smoke coming from the catch can, blowby.
The car still made something in the low 600's on that pull, but boost was sluggish coming on.
Did a comp check and it was 205, 175, 175, 150 or something close to that. Did a leak down and 1 was ok, while 2, 3, 4 sucked bad.
So without doing anymore harm, we packed up shop and headed home. Going to pull the motor on Sat, see what the damage is, and go from there. These motor sleeves are FRM (Fiber Reinforced Material) so I know they cannot be bored, only honed. So depending on the damage I'll grab another set of pistons/rings/bearings and get it back together, b/c the tune is finished, OR I'll have to sit out this summer. I'm not prepared on spending several thousand to get it back together right now, I have other priorities currently.
Only time will tell. It it's an easy fix, I'll be back out in a month maybe, my tune is ready to roll.
I'm confident had I been running a race fuel, 110/116 this would not have happened, I have no doubt. The motor is stout, and I will be right back going for 700whp when it's running again. I will have a 4cyl 700whp street car w/a/c and p/s.
Yea I'm bummed, but live and learn. I felt 700whp could be had, but we hit the threshold of meth. Can't say I didn't try.
I'll keep everyone posted.
BTW, does anyone know if anyone makes any FRM OEM pistons for the motor?

Over 650whp and you are definitely pushing it with water/meth. We saw tons of heat in the plugs over that. But I had a goal of running 9's on pump/water/meth. And I knew the consequences could be catastrophic.
We made over 700whp with it, but it's in dangerous territory, and you have to tread so softly.
Sorry to hear about the problems, but I can't say I'm surprised.

man, this really sucks Adam! I hate to see these engines fail, but at least you will be back stonger than ever
FRM can be bored, I had my block bored by IP to have them use thier 9:1 FRM pistons, but 3 sleeves were ovaled out and would take a final bore, so i was stuck with resleeving.....

I'm wondering what it would take to do a direct port meth injection setup like a nitrous setup? Use nitrous jets and hard lines w/check valves?
Smaller 125cc nozzles direct tapped into each intake manifold?
I'd believe the pump should handle that, being it's still the same amount of fluid?
Thoughts?

Sorry to hear but I guess we all know the limit's with a s2000 with pump gas and meth.
So with race gas you could of hit 700 with a ease I'm guessing?
I hope all works out when you pull it apart and no more other damage is present.

that sounds like it would even out your engine wear, if cyl.1 is fine then i'd figure if you did a direct port meth kit and maybe even bump each nozzle up to 150cc or something it should be much more reliable and have a nice chance in seeing that 700 mark
