I understood what you meant the first time. I just figured I'd give a little more info on what was happening. I may have to try something like that.

Did you just cut the leads on the oem harness leading into the ems and applied power to it?
Right the point I was trying to clarify is that I didn't want to tell you what to do, just what worked for me.

I'm not exactly sure how it's wired, but I think it's just the third power source, and no wire from the harness if that makes sense.

This happens to almost all AEM EMS users at some stage. It happened to me on the 1012 and 1052. Even when I thought I had enough battery power.

The sync will fails when there is not enough power/current. Regardless of where you get your power, recharge your battery or get a larger fully charged battery and this problem will disappears.
I don't think his sync is failing, it never happens in the first place!

better way to say i have found i think

the back of the pin on the harness is connected to the third power source not the power source that would have gone to the stock ecu. depending on how your harness is made (mine is very custom so hard to use mine as an example) just find a way to apply only the third power source and hopefully make it easily reversible.

I'm not understanding that. There are already two power sources from the harness. Where is the third coming from if you took away the other two from the harness?

The stock loom that plugs into the stock ecu has a power wire (or maybe two I don't know). I didn't use that power wire or wires. I used a power wire near the fuses. I don't know what that wire actually powers, but I tapped into that and ran that wire directly to the plug that attaches to Bank B and also ran a wire to Bank C. You only need Bank B for the thing to run.

This is coming from an old UNIX head but have you considered that the RS-232 port on your AEM might be blown? You can get a tester at Radio Shack (although most I've seen are 25 pin) that you can connect inline to see if you're communicating.

I've never done this on my AEM but I think at minimun you'll need the TD (transmit data), RD (receive data), and DTR (data transmit ready) lights on green.

Just a thought.

It is a PITA. My other problem is that I am supposed to get tuned in two weeks.

I have tried three different laptops. Two with usb adapters and one with a serial cable. Like I mentioned before, when I used the one with the serial cable I found that the unit connected with direct power but not through the harness.

The ems unit itself is fine except for a loose e-prom chip that I had found. After I found that I sent it back to AEM so they can check the unit. They tested it and sent it back and said nothing is wrong with it.
