Oil drainage at the bottom of the pan is ok as long as your rings are healthy and you don't have much blow-by. Crank case pressure is a bad thing though when your return is submerged.

You don't want oil return to be below the oil level, so that gravity only helps you and doesn't hurt you! Same goes with using anything near a 90 degree angle pipe... you want flow to be as optimal as poss

Was it an Air to Air intercooler? Or was it air to Oil cooling engine cooling?
