Default BACKLASH SETUP

Hey Guys

I bought an MFactory 4.57 final drive and Quiafe LS.
Gave it in to a local gearbox and diff center to assemble for me.
The technician tells me that he has set the backlash larger than normal.
Says that if the backlash was setup closer, I would pick up clanking noises as the pinion and crown wheel teeth dont mate correctly.
Also says that I could have issues with the teeth breaking, so in order to get a smoother pattern, they set the backlash larger.

Is this correct in what he says and could this potentially have a negative impact on the integrity and functionality of my diff?

Thanks

What did they set the backlash at?

The 4.57 is a aggressive gear ratio and can be set to 10 thousands backlash without issue but if they had to set it wider than that it is not good. They can try to lower the pinion height to see if that helps but if they have done that already and still have a unfavorable result then, the gear set is no good send it back…

On a personal note, my personal opinion, as well as my personal experience:
The only 4.56/4.57 ratio that I find to fit and install without issue in our S2000 differential is the Richmond brand gears. Richmond is a USA gear manufacturing company that was commissioned by Hard Top Guy and Rick’s signature series parts to make the ratio for our car years ago. There were 3 runs made and no more have been made since. These gear sets even used are the best!! I find them in my personal experience to be the only aftermarket gear sets to fit our S2000 rear without issue, Good luck

Monitors, it maybe a good idea to move this thread to the modification forum as it is not a Forced induction question or issue the op may get better input there

Thanks Ben (always very helpful) - will chat to them and see what my options are.
Will get that backlash setting as well.
I doubt Mfactory will take the gear set back. I bought it quite a while ago - only decided to install it now.

My apologies for posting in this forum.
Figured that with boost, the criteria is possibly different.

I spoke with the technician now.
Says he set the backlash at 10 thousands.
At 6 thousands the gears were notching.
He reckons that I should fit the diff, drive it for a while and then open it up again to see if there are any wear problems.

My concern is integrity - can the teeth break at that setting and will there be any performance issues?
I'm not too concerned about the increase in gear noise.

Thanks
