Default Berk Header: in search of 600whp

So Scott (dscdcd) and I have been looking to add a few more to the car and starting to fine tune some of the areas not previously modified.

One of those is header design. I was previously running a T1R header, which is a nice piece and added some midrange gains. Scott and I were talking and with removing even a great flowing 3.0in Ultimate Racing exhaust, I was able to gain 15-20hp on the dyno untuned. This lead to the discussion of exhaust flow. I will be adding a Sound Performance exhaust cutout over the winter to take advantage of the gains seen.

Next thought was what could I see from a high performance header? Well being as I was already running one of the better headers on the market where could I go from there. I started doing some research as to header piping size and published gains. Scott and I both agreed that the car should gain power with a free-er flowing header, and larger diameter pipe. The biggest primary of most headers I found was of 2'', like the Berk Technology header uses. I called and spoke with Brian at Berk about getting a custom header made. The Hytech is a nice piece and seems to be worth the money. I still wanted to go bigger. Im not sure how much more gains could be seen with the Hytech over the Berk but my guess is not too much. Maybe another 10hp at most. I really would like to try a 3in collector. At this point it start to get a bit costly going custom.

Brian suggested trying the Berk Header with the HFC coating as an alternative. We end up doing just that. I was impressed with the quality of the header, and it showed some gains even over the T1R! I wish I had unlimited dyno time and funds as I would have compared it to stock as well.

The dyno runs listed were performed on the same day, same dyno (Modified by KC), and nearly the same intake air temps and coolant temps. No tune modifications made between headers. Just a simple part swap. This is the only way to do a valid test. Seems that the larger diameter primaries helped some.

The car made some good gains in the midrange and decent gains all the way to redline. The quality of workmanship is great with this header. The welds are good, fitment is good, coated inside and out. The primaries are 50mm with a true 2.5in collector. The merges are quite a bit smoother than stock or most other header designs. I would definitely recommend the header for those with NA setups and from my experience, Supercharged setups. Proven to be worth the money. Hope this can help with some of those thinking about adding Berk to their setup. Brian is a great guy and would definitely recommend his products. I am now running both his header and testpipe. If I wasnt set on going with the exhaust cutout, Id run his exhaust as well.

I'm not surprised at the power gain. The Berk header has much better merges than the T1R.

I think it should. I was very careful with the install not to scratch it or damage it. The coating is guaranteed for a year. Bryan reassured me it is durable

So what gains were made with the T1R over OEM?

And someone needs to update there power chart. Sideways is going to be pissed

awesome job man! thats very nice for a 1500 blower on this motor!

but its crazy the difference in boost it takes on the same blower to make that kind of HP. i just bought a 1500 for my vette, and the kid who had it on before me made 684whp with it, running a lot less than 25lbs.

i remember scott mentioning something about stalling the blower, are you having any issues with it right now? i think the blower/setup still has some HP left in it, it just has to be freed up! looks like you're on the right track!

I kind of disagree with this slightly.

the correct way would be to have the setup tuned to its maximum potential with the current combination of parts, THEN re tune the new setup with the new combination of parts so it is running optimally.

That would give you a true comparison when swapping out just a single item.

bad tune with one header vs. a good tune with a different header isn't a fair comparison.

good tune on both is a fair assessment of the power gained by just swapping the header.
