You would not have a freezing issue while driving...unless it was really cold. I to am in NC, but we got a couple of days in the teens and 20's, I had distilled water and water wetter, never had an issue. In NY, I would certainly throw in some antifreeze when it starts getting into the freezing zone. I would do as you mentioned, just drain and add when it gets cold.

Another question for ya'll. I have the vortech aftercooler and a big heat exchanger, 3"x7.5"x26" from frozen boost. How much distilled water goes in this thing? How do I know when it's full?

For my Comptech system with the FrozenBoost HX, I just filled it till it overflowed. Cycled the pump for a while, topping it off as necessary. When I was convinced it was full with no air left in the system, I sucked out a bit of the water from the fill hole and poured in a tad of water wetter. Final fill level was about a half-inch below the fill cap's threaded hole.

It took me a while to get all air out of system with my upgraded heat exchanger. I kept adding fluid and then turning on pop and off and then adding more fluid. Once it was filled the lever would not go down at all anymore. Did some short drives etc and checked again and didn't go down so level I could tell was good.

This is pretty much the method I followed as well, I did squeeze the inlet and outlet hoses to help work out any bubbles. It took a little over half a gallon of distilled water to fill my SOS Racing Heat Exchanger.
