Default Broken VTEC Solenoid Bolt Extraction

Hello everyone,

I recently finished installing and tuned my KW C38-91 kit (review coming soon), had everything running great and made good power, but unfortunately I wasn’t so lucky and had 2 of the 3 supplied vtec solenoid bolts shear off inside the head, shooting oil everywhere and making a huge mess, but more importantly, the bolts broke off inside the head. Does anybody know of a good method of extraction that doesn’t involve removing the head? I have several shops around me that all said they could with the head removed but that is not something I feel like going through at this time. If anybody has any tips or advice it would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

get some dental picks and try to spin it out by hand, with the head of the bolt gone there is no torque holding them in

How so? Just try to hook it and spin?

This exact same thing happened to a buddy of mine with the kraftworks kit. I believe he just used a simple extraction kit to get the bolts out.

Was he able to use a drill in there? My current drill is too bulky so I might go buy another but if you can confirm it works I’ll make my way to Home Depot

Try to find a right-angle drill adapter for your drill or a Dremel. It should be much cheaper and will give you a ton of space to work with in the engine bay.

Unless you bottomed the bolts out or stripped the threads, the bolt should be able to spin freely, just get something that you can spin it with, like a dental pick.

I have an update, I managed to extract one with a basic extractor, but the other unfortunately stripped the threads and still hasn’t come out. The threads from a few mm in are stripped but the rest is still intact, I think it should still be able to catch enough to make good contact. Will get back to it on Monday and provide everybody with an update. Thanks again for all the help!
