Default Catch Can Suggestions?

Looking for a catch can. I've tried reading up on catch cans and crank ventilation, but there is just a lot of (mis)information out there and I'm not sure what conclusions to draw or what would be a good setup. Hoping you guys can help me out.

Basically just looking for something that WORKS well. I don't care if its all pretty/shiny/blingy/etc. like the cusco/asm/whatever ones... I just want it to work and work well... aka not just a soda can with bungs and a filter on it.

Highly unlikely the car will ever see more than around 500whp, so it doesn't need to be top of the line or support too much. Was hoping to find something that wouldn't break the bank too. Not looking to cheap out on some chinese eBay special, but don't want to spend several hundred dollars either... I guess maybe $200 would be my cap... was hoping closer to $100, but not sure what that will get me...

Anyways, after the can is picked out, the next question is, how do I set it up? By that I mean, do I need to weld AN bungs on to the valve cover? Where? What about the OEM PCV system? Block it off or replace it? or what?

So many questions. Ugh...

Khiem,

I read your article awhile back, but was under the assumption that something a little more might be required for a turbo car because of the added pressure. Guess I was wrong? Would the routing of the lines and everything be exactly the same as shown in the article?

What are your thoughts on the catch cans with large AN lines, breather filters, and welded fittings on the valve covers that most of the turbo S2000 guys are using?

Thanks.

I've opted to run one of those air compressor filters as my catch can (~$20), which is plumbed inline with the stock PCV and intake manifold with a KrankVent post-catch can. I then I have a KrankVent on the front with a breather filter on the end of it and capped off the port at the intake elbow.

Setup: SOS 6psi

I have the Saikou Michi breather tank with two .5" inlets & a 1.25" breather filter on top.. pretty nice piece for $120
He will make the openings whatever size you want though.

I bought this one on ebay for 125$ I can't remember the seller, but it was for a civic. It is designed to sit in the battery location, and it actually fits our stock battery tray perfectly. I spent probably another 50 or so on the fittings and hose, but it does the job well for a little less than 2 bills. Only complaint with is it has 6 ports so I had to buy 4 10an caps, but at least theres room to grow I guess. It is a super heavy built piece though, like 1/8 thick aluminum and it came with both filters and the hold down hardware. Its a little large, but it works for my setup.

The only thing that would be different is one hose; instead of going to the intake tube before the throttle body on the NA setup, you have to attach on the intake tube in front of the turbo.

I don't like the breather filters because they basically only serve half the purpose. The idea of the PCV and front vent location on the valve cover are to SUCK the air/pressure out. If you just stick a breather on it, well, it does let any positive pressure buildup escape but it's not as effective as there's no vacuum pulling on the valve cover.

Here's a good article with a very full explination for a naturally aspirated setup:

Ah ok. I was wondering about the added ventilation vs the loss of suction on the breather filters. Good to get a clear answer about that.

Will attaching a line to the turbo intake pipe pull oil into the turbo intake? If so, will that hurt the turbo or have any other bad effects? That would be my only concern with that.
