D1- PM me when you're coming up. I'd be glad to run up to the shop and chat with ya.

I have 69-70k On the motor I believe. I don't remember exactly.

Spoolin-I'm really wanting to push it to 500whp/E85 and be able to push this car and not worry about the motor self destructing. So do you check the play while the flywheel is on? It is making a loud clunk type of sound everytime we move it back and forth. Can you find out what the limits are as well? Thanks
The flywheel being on shouldnt be a problem with checking the crank play so you can leave it on. I'm pretty sure my buddies was still on when the block was out and we checked his play. You just need to have the clutch and pressure plate off because that could cause pressure on the crank that will make it hard to get a good read on the movement.

I just checked my Helms manual and standard crank play is .004"-.014". Service limit is .018". I'd call it safe if its .014" and under. Over .014" and you should probably rebuild. My buddies also clanked when you moved the crank back and forth and thats why we checked it, but it ended up being within specs.

We just pulled my ACT HD clutch out 2 weeks ago after well over 65Kmi and 3+ years of driving on it (including track time, two cross-country trips, and plenty of DD (and yes, cold starts)). No excessive crank play.

It's not the clutch guys. It's just that ACT is the most popular aftermarket clutch, and being as it's more likely to be found on modified cars, it's more likely that this clutch will be on a car that has crankwalk (but then, hasn't there also been at least one S with the OEM clutch that suffered from crankwalk? and aren't most of the crankwalked engines also boosted?). Of course, correlation =/= causation except on internet message boards where it's easier to just jump on the bandwagon. That being said, I think I'm going to start a new bandwagon:

Powdercoating my wheels caused crankwalk in my '05. Has this happened to anyone else?

You must have gotten the newer version with the updated pressure plate.

I think the updated one has come out over 3+ years ago. But I'm glad you don't have any issues. Good for you. Doesn't seem like I'm one of the lucky survivors.

So just a coincidence that everyone that has this issued has had an act clutch? Coincidence that ACT came out with an updated pressure plate to resolve this COMMON issue? FYI I've read about others with this problem non boosted as well when I first joined the s2ki forums.

Didn't have time yesterday to work on the car, was too busy working on the new house instead. If LJ has other projects he's working on of his today I'll stop by to dink with my car.

I still have the ACT HD non revised version on my ap2 engine. Have been boosted and tracked for about 3 years with no issues. Probably about 30k miles

a clutch isnt going to cause crank walk/thrust bearing wear... the ONLY thing that will cause that is a lack of oil.

I have about 30k miles on the old ACT PP. No crank walk issues here. My clutch safety switch is jumped. I'm not worried.
