I plan on going with the PPG setup since there isn't anything out there that can handle the power.

The whine doesn't come from the dog engagement, it comes from gears being straight cut. The dogbox that PPG makes for our cars is helical cut and doesn't whine. I've driven mine on the street for awhile now.

As for a synchro set, the issue I see here is it's still a synchro style trans, and isn't a great drag race solution. I noticed with my stock trans, utilizing stock synchro's that you couldn't flat foot shift it, and it was kind of inconsistent at the track on shifts. Maybe this could be remedied with better synchros, but the stock one wasn't very good once the power gets up there. The PPG dogbox is very consistent and flawless at the track, which is very important to me.

That said, I would of been interested in a cheaper solution, but it would need to be something that is proven to work consistently in a high hp environment for me to be interested. I mean, it's nice that it would be cheaper, but if it doesn't hold up to the abuse that the PPG stuff does, than a couple thousands dollars less isn't really worth it in my eyes.

Someone mentioned a trans swap all together, I think that would be an option for someone wanting to just get another "stock" replacement trans. But for someone wanting a trans to actually go out and perform well at the track, there really isn't a substitute for a dog box. Other than an auto, and the convertor setup you would need to run would make it horrible on the street.

Another thing that people don't realize is the S2000 PPG dogbox is more expensive because of a couple things, supply and demand, and its a 6 speed. If you just buy the gearset it's a bit over $6k, add the reduction gear and you are a tad over $8k. I don't know where the $10k number came from, but it's not much more than the FWD honda stuff. But people have to realize that gearset is only 4 gears.

Enough of my rambling....haha. I've already purchased a PPG trans, but I would of looked at other solutions if they were available, but personally, it's still going to be a big investment and I would like to see it work consistently in a race car before I would want to spend the money.

Yea, I just realized that. I wrote that BEFORE I did research on it. Kudos to PPG for doing this for us DD. Most who buy a dogbox though have a 2nd car and just use the dogbox to drag. Honestly I'm suprised they didn't have made it straight cut and SUPER strong.

I too am looking to buy a PPG gearbox in the near future since there are no other alternatives for high horsepower setups. Less money spent would be good but not if it doesnt last.

If some folks can do me a tremendous favor..I did have some detailed pics of the stock unit (casing, gears, etc) but cant find them at this moment. Please post them up. Same goes for those who have the PPG unit. Snap some pics and post them up. I will get some myself. But the more angels and perspective the better. There will be a more economically savy solution..
