Default Educated opinions needed..

Well as some of you have probably seen my previous posts I am currently attempting to "tune on a budget", and so I have a question...

This is the classic turbo vs. supercharger. I realize that this has been debated over and over again, but many of the posts here are a bit dated so I am attempting to get some fresh opinions.

Now I was leaning toward the supercharger simply because of the fact that it is cheaper with some decent power gains, I don't need anything too crazy 300whp is fine with me.

Now I lean toward the supercharger because of two main reason:

1. $$$$$

2. Install ( in essence more $$$$$)

If I can get a decent bolt on kit will I be able to install it myself having moderate experience with cars (if not realistic price of the install), and more than anything will I need to buy anything else for the s/c to work properly? I currently have a test pipe and comptech intake, the rest of my mods are suspension and tires/wheels, no effect on the s/c directly.

I would really appreciate your advice on this topic even if it has been discussed before, thanks in advance...

Please read the Forced Induction forum. Everything you need to know is there.

If $$$ is an issue... don't continue to mod.

You can get a SC or TC for about the same price. Both are bolt on and both can be installed on your own.

Additional upgrades depends on your intentions and the driver.

The Greddy kit is looking to be a good way to go for getting good cheap power. Plus it looks relatively easy to install (from looking at the Greddy turbo kit Install thread that was just started up.) Plus it already comes with everything you need. Thats the way I'm going to be going very soon.

There is a huge faq section at the top of this board. I would recommend doing a little homework to help you narrow your questions.

What do you consider to be cheap, what is your budget, how comfortable are you doing the install?( have you read any install diy's on the S/C)? I would recommend you calling Inline Pro or Science of Speed or Comptech. I have badgered these guys on many occasions and they have been nothing but helpful.

I would also recommend budgeting for an "Oh Sh*t" fund, because Sh*t always comes up, especially if you are looking at buying used. F/I is not cheap, there is really no other way of explaining it.

i see u said your leaning towards the super chargers, if i saw this a few months ago i would say go turbo in a heartbeat, but that new kraftworks super charger looks amazing, they are supposed to come out with a high and low boost kit, the high boost kit trying to hit 400. so its a toss up but if you are gonna go the sc route, wait for the kraftworks

I'll try to break it down for you....

used Vortech anywhere from $3000~$3500
install at a shop anywhere from $600~$1000
new clutch which I would strongly recommend $600~$1000
clutch install at a shop $600
guages i.e. boost, oil pressure, and wideband $400~$600

total cost $5200~$6700 this is just a rough estimate.

this is just for the base kit.... if you feel you need to tune it, you'll need some type of EMS or piggy back with tune which is another $1000~$2000

If doing it on a budget is your goal, I'd think an "oh shit!" fund would be absolutely essential. I'd probably want $700-1000 for WHEN the diff, clutch, or whatever other piece goes out. I would LOVE to get FI, but I bought the car new, want the Kraftwerks high boost kit, and want to change the clutch and probably the differential all at once so nothing breaks unexpectedly. I won't even move until I've got $10k I can blow on my car.

reliable car >> faster car
