Wondering what might have went on here, piston ring failure?

detonation station! that sucks I know it looks like something went through the motor but severe detonation will take chunks out of the piston and head may also have shattered rings that got eaten

You'll find the real surprise when you pull out the pistons.

Piston rings are probably cracked into a few hundred pieces.

Could the rings have failed from low pressure? I had an oil pressure issue but it was fixed last time I ran it the car did get hot oil > 270F but coolant was 200F ish

Something got in there and beat the motor up for sure. I dont think its pieces of ring, with out the top of the piston broken there is no way for chunks of ring to get up that far, if the rings or lands were broken I would expect to see more scaring on the cylinder walls.

Any chance you could have sucked up anything through the intake? Throttle body come apart, turbo come apart?

Yikes. Yea the cylinder walls look pretty clear. It does seem like you sucked something up and it rattled around in there

It could be I had all the chargepipes off and I changed the valve cover and intake also

I had this happen to me on my F20c. Piston rings cracked and eventually got on top of the piston. Then smashed the piston into the head. Obviously two is teh worst, but you can clearly see the ring got on top without visually damaging the ring from a top view on cyl 3.

Take the pistons out and look for yourself!
