Default Engine oi - Switching from Motul - worth it?

I have had my bottom end built and the compression was lowered to about 9.5:1. The clearances were a bit loose to accommodate expansion so a bit of oil is burnt during warm up. Overall the car runs well under boost and burns a bit of oil during warm up and I do have to top it off every so often. My tuner used Motul oil and told me that this is what I should only run in my engine. I have had some bad experiences with other tuners so I had them blueprint, build and tune the entire engine and it's been going strong for a few seasons now.

My questions are, can I swap oil to something like mobil 1 or should I stick with Motul? Will this negatively affect the motor at all? The price of Motul is pretty high, almost twice as much so I'm just seeing if it would be worth the swap. I really don't want to switch from Motul only to have the engine fail and then get blamed for not using Motul even if it were to be completely coincidental.

I'm not opposed to sticking with it although the price is a lot higher, it's very seldom so I guess this is more to satisfy my curiosity.

Cheers.

Motul has many oils to choose from, were you not told anything more specific than that?
Generally speaking brand does not matter at all, weight and type matters very much.

Sorry, forgot to mention that. It's 300V.

I thought as much. 300V is a top end racing spec oil. You would be very hard pressed to find something from a different brand on the same level let alone able to top the 300V range. It's high temp stability is excellent and high temps are something you in particular want to guard against. Your tuner seems to know what he's talking about recommending that oil to you but yes, its really expensive and I've had good results with the 8100 Xcess full synth from Motul. It's also quite a capable oil. Much cheaper but proper good too. You could run the 8100 next oil change to see for yourself. You will probably notice less performance throughout the range though that difference may or may not be blatantly obvious. BTW Spoon specifies 300V too

Mobil 1 is a great oil but there have been threads here where owners said that it will burn off quickly in AP1's in particular but that may hold just as true for AP2's. throw in boost and it may not be a good idea to run Mobil 1. Experiences differ though...
What oil weight/viscosity are you running now?

"Twice as expensive" is still under (guess) $70 for an oil change. Does your super/turbocharger use the engine's oil? How often to you change it? I intuitively doubt you need exotic motor oil for a street car though. Loose pistol ring tolerance (typical of burning oil during warm up) works both ways causing oil dilution with gasoline. Oil analysis seems in order,

My understanding is that V300 or any other "RACING" oil are designed for extreme temp resistance, however, it's ability to resist higher temps, shearing and track use results in having different additives that won't last as long as 8100 and other "Daily.ROAD" use oils.Basically you'll need to change it more often, etc.

I'd really email MOTUL and do more research on this before I would switch to race specific oils that also cost a lot.

Yes, that is correct. If you are in the habit of changing oil every 4-7000 miles max then 300V is viable even if your vehicle is a daily. If your changing oil every 9-10000 miles then 8100 will last longer (maintain its film strength, etc).
