Expensive Part of Turbo Setup?
Saw some turbo manifolds on eBay for $300 which was far less than I thought. How much would a medium/large turbo cost? Aside from an intercooler, what else is needed? I know a new EMS system is nice (<$1000) I keep reading that a turbo costs between $6000-$7000 once it's all said in done yet I have yet to find a breakdown.
Thanks,
Thanks,
if you piece togetehr a cheap turbo kit you can have almost everything at around 2500-3000 this is just for the basic kit using ok parts, but when people say they spent 6000-7000 usually includes gauges, wideband, ems, miscellanous hoses and fittings consider upgrading the clutch and dyno tuning dont forgot bigger exhaust and installation. yeah once you all said and done you will have spent well over $6,000.00
do it right the first time, dont go cheap. those ebay manifolds that ur talking about for 300, are never gonna last if you really wanna see some hp improvements. just buy the entire kit from like either lovefab, or full-race. they have really good manifolds and turbo's. great quality on all their parts. save up and just do a one shot kill, get the kit, and u will not be dissapointed. or if you just ****ing around, and dont really wanna make serious power, but just wanna get ur shit moving on boost, well yea u can start off with the ebay goodies i guess. it all depends on how deep ur pockets are.
Around 1998 when I was still in school I decided to turbo my 96 Integra LS. So I ordered a Drag Gen III kit for around 4k I think and put it on myself. After I was done, I started getting into the little nickle and diming. New fuel pump, MBC, exhaust, stainless oil return, clutch, gauges, and lord only knows what else because I don't remember. Long story short, my CC was up to 10k by the time I was done. Mind you there was 0 tuning, just the stock ECU. I'm not quite sure how much I was making powerwise, but when I look back on it I really wish I would have just brought it to someone and had it done right.
I am getting ready to have IP drop a turbo into my AP2. When all is said and done, I'll get more bang for my buck and a heck of a lot more peace of mind. Not to mention - I won't have to spend anything more.
There's much much more to turbo'ing that meets the naked eye. So, I would recommend if you are considering that route, listen to everyone's advice. Just save up and do it right the first time and in the long run you'll look back and have no regrets.
Happy motoring.

The most expensive part of going FI, aside from the cost of the kit itself, if the labor to install it, and of course the labor after-the-fact to correct the FI-inherent problems to come.
-----------
now, i just went FI ... i tell you , if you get a good kit, + supporting mods, you will be spending way more than 6k
