Default Are gauges necessary?

I want to know if gauges are absolutely necessary to have? Don't get me wrong, I love the way it looks, but there aren't to many places in the S that you can mount them. I want to keep the interior as well as my exterior as stock as possible, plus I don't want to attract the attentions of cops and thieves.

What are my alternatives? I thought about mounting a custom bracket on the passenger side and have a laptop plugged into whatever ems i decide to go with. What will and will not display with a laptop.

In short: My objective is to not have any gauges and replace them with a laptop, is it possible?

P.s I will be running no more than 9lbs psi on a turbo kit.

Please don't tell me to search, I have been searching on this subject for months but have not found any hard evidence to answer my questions.

TIA

You could make a laptop do what you want to do but the problem is, there is no way your going to look at a laptop while driving to see the read out. The whole point of small gauges is to be able to monitor them safely while driving. With that being said, I don't think the laptop idea is a very bright one as it would only help after your engine is possibly toast (loss of oil pressure for example).

Yeah, you can't really watch a laptop while you're driving...but your buddy can (aka tuner). Also, remember you can always use the data logging features from your EMS.

I've got an awesome Defi gauge setup and sometimes I think ignorance would be bliss. I've never had a motor-related mechanical issue with my car but when you have gauges you're constantly vigilant and I think it takes away from the beauty of the S2000 as compared to many other platforms you can modify. You can boost an S2000, drive it like you hate it, and not worry about it leaving you stranded.

I agree that the gauges can take away from the beaty. But if you beat on a turbo s2000 and don't watch it, it will leave you stranded and alot of money in the whole.

Eh, I still stand by my opinion that a turbo set up can be just as reliable as a SC if done properly. So no reason to point out a turbo setup specifically. When your doign ANY kind of FI, its a good idea to know whats going on just in case something does happen.

While this discussion is taking place, I have a question...

Which gauges do you feel are necessary to monitor? At this point I'm considering a boost gauge, EGT, and perhaps oil temp? What would the boosted crew recommend?

Thanks

thanks spec always a great help. So basically you are saying that if i have gauges and recognize that fuel pressure, per your example, is go to high i can pull over and turn the motor off? Will this save the motor?
Thanks for all the replies and definitely agree with everbody, but I just don't like the idea of having the gauges on the pillar, too much attention.
