Are gauges necessary?

While this discussion is taking place, I have a question...

Which gauges do you feel are necessary to monitor? At this point I'm considering a boost gauge, EGT, and perhaps oil temp? What would the boosted crew recommend?

Thanks
Depends on what your running (turbo/SC).

If a non-ball bearing turbo:
Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Boost

Ball bearing turbo:
Oil / water temp, Oil Press, boost

SC:
Oil Pressure, Oil temp

Personally, I like knowing whats going on with my engine incase the unmentionable happens so I run:

Wideband A/F, Fuel Press, Oil Press/Temp, Water Temp, EGT, and Boost

I have no gauges on my turbo S2000 and like it that way. I wanted a 100% stock look inside. The only gauge mod I did was the modifry ECT driver so that the stock ECT gauge would work with the AEM. Never have I actually needed to have a gauge in the car. Every now and then, I do check up on everything with my laptop though.

I do have gauges on my Monte Carlo, but it's because I think the gauge pods are much less obtrusive on those cars and I do not have a standalone with integrated boost control and WBO2 in it. Those are separate gauges.

when you use your laptop to monitor now and then, is it on while you drive? or do you hook it up, save it on memory, and then analyze it later? Also how long do you drive to get sufficient data to analyze?

I think i will leave some trust in church automotive and hope that they do a excellent job with my tuning

Things can go wrong no matter how good the tune is (for any type of FI or even stock engine). Most gauges arn't needed but for a turbo car boost (at the min) is VERY important to have. You want to know if your holding boost and not overboosting (for whatever reason). Then maybe oil press is a good idea as well (a stock motor should have this as well).

you're right spec and everybody else, don't get me wrong, i think that gauges are absolutely important, but I am just trying to avoid them because it makes it SOOOOO obvious that you are FI. I was never good at arts and crafts, so i am surely not going to cut my dash up . Ricks would be the next best thing, but $1200!!! yikes.

So, lets switch up for a second, since we have all agreed that gauges are important, what should each of them read for "normal" numbers?
I.e., oil temp/pressure, water temp, etc.

If you have a great way to hide gauges, or another alternative for me, PLEASE post up
