I actually like the stock gears a lot, I guess since my engine goes to 9100 it makes the situation a little bit better but maybe 3.90's wouldnt be so bad.
u have an ap1, the trannys reduction gear is very different, so your at least 1-4 gears are taller overall then an ap2 tranny, not too mention yes you wind out to 9100.

if i was siadam, puddymod built diff with 3.90's in the case.

compare ap1 to ap2, then futz with rear gear. its fun to mess with

for siadam, his 5th would rise to 137mph

I am going to have my diff built by puddy this winter...so I'll look into swapping my gears...but is this only going to "extend" my overall mph, as you said go from mid 120's in 5th to almost 140 in 5th?

When I shift from 3rd --> 4th, will it also give me a bigger range to work with..instead of the measly 2500 rpms?

In my 99 Si, I would shift and it would drop back to around 5500 or so, and then pull all the way to redline which was 9k, then back to 5500 and so on which made for a good long powerband.

This car making more power almost feels slower b/c I get on the pipe, pull to ~8500 and then shift, falls to ~ 6500 let's say then shift again @ 8500.

~2500 of power is teh ub3r gh3y.

lowering the fd ratio isnt going to change where you end up in the powerband on an upshift, but it will keep you in gear longer for sure

x2. if you want to change were you land in the rpm range you need to change the gear ratios inside the transmission. BUT, why do this when you make less power at 5500 then you do at 6500?

I just worked it out, and dropping from 4.10 to 3.90 gains me like 5mph on a few gears, not worth the $$ or hassle.

I'd rather have 5 seconds of 400whp then 1 seconds of 500whp, thats why.

Constantly shifting gears kills us, I can line up against my buddies stang/vette/etc and they shift like 1-2 times and I'm shifting like 4 times. Retarded.

when u lower the rear gear, you will be in each gear longer becuase you are doing more work in each gear. +12mph in 5th would be pretty nice. what kinda runs are you doin with your buddies? its hard to compare a ls1 tranny to this, becuase they have crazy deep gears do to here V8 BROAD BROAD power band. some vettes can hit 60 in first. fat chance a s2k is gonna hit 60 in first unless you do a PPG tranny.

thats your only other option really.

Mostly 40-120/130 stuff.

I'm thinking ahead when we go to the track...the shifting is still going to be tough on us...sucks we don't have other options..

I can't afford any custom gearset, thats for sure. I don't have the luxury to just throw $$ into this car. It's a fun ride, but @ the same time I'd like to make it as fun as I possibly can.

[edit]
I should add that in my 99 Si, I could go from 80-120mpg in 4th gear. In the s2k, I've shifted twice during that time and topped out 5th

yea i really like the ap1 gearing, felt a little long stock but now its perfect. I still might do 3.90's in the diff when I have it built.

You could always get the PPG drop gear, which will effectively lower your rear end gearing tremendously. I used to shift all the time, with this setup, I can almost go through the traps in 3rd gear, and I'm in the mid/high 130's
