well coolant can get in if you didnt drain the block when you removed the head. it can spill in from the coolant passages by the sleeves. maybe the head was warped. did you check for straightness? maybe pressurise the cooling system and you well hear a leak from the spark plug hole.

The actual compression number isn't important as long as all 4 are consistent. I've seen as much as a 50lbs difference between two different gauges back-to-back.

Have you run it? Check the coolant for combustion elements, and make sure your oil isn't chocolate milk.

Would it be a smart idea to get new head studs and replace them without taking the head off?

In your situation no. I would want to inspect the decks for contamination, straightness, etc. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the valves in that cylinder either.

One question: does your compression tester still work on another cylinder? They use cheap schrader valves to hold pressure, and the seals get damaged easy.

Definitely check your coolant holding pressure.

You know what's funny, I've had the 3mm HG on for almost 2 years now and I park my car during the winter for up to 4 months at a time without ever starting it. Well, I decided to go ahead and check the coolant level before starting the car up for the first time in 4 months and low and behold, it had tons of pressure release behind the cap when I opened it. I'd say I don't have any leaks with my HG with that find and I have been running 28 psi for over a year now. LOL

That can't be answered without looking at it. Take the head off again and see why it's not sealing, fix that, then put it back together with new bolts or a set of ARP studs.
