Help a newbie
I can buy an AP1 for alot cheaper than a AP2.....Is there a difference when it comes to putting on a turbo? I keep hearing that AP2 has a bit more torque...but who cares if you going to turbo.......right?
AP2 is a superior motor IMO. I like the suspension of an AP1 but the 2.2 is stronger IMO then an 2.0 any day. There are a lot of small fixes that occur on the AP2 that give it a little edge when it comes to reliability. Vtec= nothing once you have turbo so forget that. Not having to rev to 9k = easier to drive and more tq, it also means less stress on the internals in comparison.
ap2 also is a lot nicer when it comes to the interior, and personally I like the Ap2 headlights and tail lights more...and even a bigger deal is the front and rear bumper, Ap2 FTW IMO.

different strokes though.

Ap1 Hardcore
Ap2 alittle bit on the soft side, maybe your a male hairdresser
Sorry had to post something stupid
at the end of the day it comes down to budget and what you can afford and what you want to do with it once you have the car

The AP2 is a watered-down more street-able version of the car. While the AP1 is more "hardcore". DeadZero is dead wrong, the AP2 is rated at the same HP as the AP1, but it does have like 5-6 ft.lb torque on the AP1, so you can get through the mcdonalds drive thru a half second faster!!!
I don't necessarily agree with 05turboS2K either, I don't see how have an 8200 redline is any "easier" to drive than 9000. There is no inconvenience in revving those extra RPM's, actually it's quite rewarding! I know plenty of AP2 drivers who were at the dragon this spring who said that they wish they has the extra rpm because it would fill out second gear and they could avoid having to switch to third so soon and loose the "sweet spot" in their acceleration (a lot of that also has to do with the AP2 tranny which is geared shorter than the AP1 in gears 1-4, and taller in 5-6). And as for the engine internals, I've got over 150,000 miles between two AP1's revving to 9k daily and ZERO problems.
You're going to sacrifice either way you go. As I mentioned above, nearly everything about the AP1 is more "hardcore" in essence. In the end it really comes down to personal preference. No on can tell you to go either way. It's a choice only you can make. Stylistically I think the AP2 is dead on inside and out.... but since most S2K drivers modify their cars with aftermarket parts both inside and out, I don't see why that should matter.
Oh, and definitely save yourself a lot of headaches and avoid the DBW cars (06+) for turbo charging...

I agree that the stock AP2 looks better than a stock AP1, but like previously stated, once modified, it's hard to tell the difference. Headlights and taillights usually aren't messed with and I like the AP2's lights much better. You can obviously buy an AP1 for cheaper than an AP2 car because they are older, but look around and you can find a good deal on either.
Almost all turbo kits are going to cost you the same for either AP1 or AP2, so that isn't an issue. Just stay away from 06+ cars because they have drive by wire throttles and no turbo kits are offered for them yet, just the Kraftwerks SC kit.
Either way, you will be happy and welcome to the club!

As much as I love mine, I have installed several AP2 parts onto mine. I prefere the wheels, the front bumper and rear, taillights, interior and you can install Hondata very easily. I picked mine up cheap enough that all that really didn't matter though. Could do it again I would probably try and find a Red 04 or 05.
Longer rev-zone = hard to drive... always. Look at streetbikes, very few in the world can properly extract power from something that redlines at 16,000 rpm. A 350 Z is easier to drive for the same reason. There's something to be said about "usable power" it's worth more then anything else, it means you can be outa gear and get away with it better, it means you don't have to stare at your tach as hard while your driving to stay perfectly on the rev's.
If I had the choice to make my car do everything it does now and redline at 6k I would do it in a heartbeat because it would mean I have WAY more TQ and a way better powerband.
When it comes to straight line power LOWER REDLINE WINS. Simple fact is this. The engine makes power at a high RPM and the wheels start out at 0 RPM. The way you get the wheels to match the speed of the engine is through the clutch, the higher the rev zone, the more slipping/grinding the clutch must do which means POWER WASTED, not to mention harder to control launch. When you slip the clutch you create heat from friction... we all know that the energy in the form of heat means less energy to move the car forward and... more clutch wear.
I wouldn't call the ap2 watered down because stock for stock on a track, it'll spank the Ap1 by 95% of drivers hands down. I've driven both back to back and I'd say a very talented driver (pro driver) would be able to get the most of an AP1 and it could be a debate, but to 99.99% of S owners the Ap2 will turn a better lap simply because it's easier to control and is confident building.
As for gearing....well that's gearing, and if you want to get serious then change your gearing because NEITHER fit the track perfectly but both fit it just fine IMO. Theoretically your gearing should be set up specifically for each track you drive (WE WISH WE HAD THAT MONEY) and since that doesn't happen, one track will benefit an Ap2 and one will benefit an AP1. If a track happens to make you either ride redline or shift one quick shift before braking you know your missing time but then again.... the ap1 might have the same problem in another corner or on another track. It's a wash. The SWEET SPOT is going to be easier to stay in when in a AP2 then an AP1. Vtec range is 1k shorter but then again, the ap2 makes power out of Vtec better then the Ap1 and the gearing works out to make that 2k of Vtec it does have, last longer.
Both are plenty capable. I'd take the Ap2 anyday for simple drive-ability and longevity.
If Honda thought the 2.0 motor was superior to the 2.2 ....why is their "track version" the CR a 2.2 ap2? Simple..... HONDA KNOWS THE 2.2 IS BETTER and they know the spring rate realtionship of the Ap1 is better, so they did the simple thing get an ap2 and put ap1 sways/springs on it.
