Default It's All in the Timing

I need some help, I have had some issues lastly and the car has been missing so I have been slowly checking issues off my list. I found a few issues that I have not been able to figure out.

(1) My knock sensor is not working. I have never seen any voltage when I pull up the knock parameters. I have checked and the sensor is still plugged in and the wire is still intact. Has anyone ever seen a sensor fail?

(2) Next, I hooked up my timing light and with the timing set to 0 deg, per the advance on my timing light I am 18.5 deg retarded. So I changed the base timing in the EMS by retarding the timing in the calibration until it read 0 and took the car for a spin but the timing was too retarded and it got very hot and drove terribly. The weird part is that my timing map mirrors many others I have seen?

I verified the cam and crank timing and it is also okay.

I had checked the timing before using my aftermarket ignition and it was spot on with the base calibration. Secondly, I played with the timing and light and with a 15 deg change in the EMS timing the timing light shows 30 deg.

Also I could only pull a signal from the positive and negative and not the trigger, could this be causing an offset?

I took a good video but the downsampleing in Photobucket kills it.

1.) when knock sensors fail, they go crazy with knock response. like their threshold of tolerance is gone. they show knock from valve train clatter. lol

2.) would you like me to send you my previous calibration so you can compare yours to it? my setup runs great.

let me know bro.

My knock sensor reads .02 volts at idle. Is yours reading anyhting at all? I pinched the harness once and it grounded out the knock sensor between the transmission and engine block. Bad day. Took me almost a week to figure out why the fuse kept blowing. I ended up running its own wire and cut the other one off.

Your tuner may have just turned your knock sensor feedback off. Some of them do this.

Check the rpm reads right on your timing light, might be in 2 stroke or wasted spark mode causing you to set your timing way off.

All it ever reads is 0.02 V and never anything else.

I will have to check the continuity and see if it was pinched.

I think it is a wasted spark which is why it doubles the amout of advance.

That would be great I am always interested in seeing others. (Shoot Me a PM and we can discuss.)

Check the sensitivity of your knock sensor. Are you using AEM?
