There are differences from the AP2 vs the AP1 tranny, where I would say its worth a bit more.

The synchros are different.
Well I guess thats true. I forgot that they changed the synchro's a bit so that might make that part a little better. Per Jon from TRE though, he said the gears are no stronger than the AP1. He also said that more than likely, Honda has already shot peened the stock gears, so trying to go that route wont work either. He said they are probably already as strong as they can be with what they used.

How much is it for this tranny swap? I would only need the tranny since I have the 300zx rearend and DSS driveshaft/axles. I mean, can you just buy the tranny from this guy and bolt it on and go or do you have to modify all kinds of stuff? Does the shifter fit like stock? How does this tranny do with shifting when reved to 9500 rpm?

Why dont we hear more about this setup if its working really good? You would think this guy would be a sponsor and be trying to hype this setup up for a solution for our tranny if it works that great.
Our guy is trying to decide whether to market the kit. If you search my other posts, you can see the fully detailed list of tweaks.

He uses a custom bellhousing to mate a new G-Force T-5 trans with special shifter so it comes out the stock boot / uses the stock handle. Same travel from 1-2 / 3-4 as stock, and great feel. Top gear is 650 RPM lower than 6th in the AP2 at 70 MPH. It uses a 5.13 in the 8.8" diff out back, and if you know diffs, you know the 8.8 has a WIDE range of available options going down to 3.08 or lower. And also the LSD is a clutch type unit with carbon discs - works as well as my old OS Giken & Cusco units did, with less "pop" noise.

The trick is having to modify the fuel tank to clear the 8.8. Some people might try to shortcut that by either locating the diff too low or hammering the tank. Cutting / re-welding a tank *properly* is the area we're concerned with, so it would have to be a kit.

Will let you guys know if we product-ize it. Given that PPG gears alone for the trans can run $8K, and don't address the bearing-support issue for second gear, I could see this setup going for $8K ish on the trans/bellhousing/mounts/driveshaft and somewhere btwn $4K - $6.5K for the pumpkin/gears/diff/axles/CVs. It's not inexpensive, but quality rarely is. It doesn't have any DriveShaft Shop axle issues either (I had their 2.9 kit which didn't fit and the firm I purchased them from wouldn't take them back).

although the ap2 trans has better synchros its just as weak. The synchros arent the problem. Its the pussy gears. Not worth it to get the ap2 unless u can get it for around 600 like the ap1s. Lowest I see ap2 go for is 1000. so you are almost getting two ap1 transmissions for the price of one AP2. It also feels a lot worse blowing a 1000-1300$ trans opposed to a 600$ trans im sure which is what the end result will be since both are weak.

im also not buying any of these people looking for interest in making a trans affordable for the s2000 until I see one made and tested. Its expensive to do it right and it seems like after these people really see whats involved their prices are similar to PPG prices who have been proven for a long time now.

Sorry but im just getting sick of seeing all these hopes for something when nothing comes out of it. If its made and so good why arent they trying to sell it? people clearly need it.

^ that's why I haven't bought anything trans wise yet. I agree some people could make a killing with how many people want a strong trans for a reasonable price. Ppg will continue to sell gears for 8k cause nobody else has anything out yet. Price of drivetrain easy 15k for everything every bell and whistle.

I talked with Chris Madeo from Bullhead Gears a while back through email and he said he could get me the PPG synchro gearset for $5700. He also said that I will need to check the stock synchro's and bearing and replace accordingly. I believe the full buildup with all new bearings and synchro's would run about $6500. It's a lot of money but may be the route I take in the future since its been proven. Hopefully the price may drop a bit more by the time I'm ready to get mine.

I'm on my 3rd diff, 2nd motor and trans. Car has aprox 150k original miles. Aprox 70k have been boosted at different levels all under 400whp. I decided to move to all ap2 drivetrain.

I've heard bad reviews on the PAR gearsets but thats just from one guy that knows trannies.

Anyone know what kind of warranty are on these PAR and PPG gearsets? I mean, for $5000-$6000 for the synchromesh gearset that they claim the gears are good for 900 whp, they do have a good warranty if something breaks....Right?

That is one of the big reasons I am staying away from these gearsets, I mean $6000-$8000 can buy a whole lot of AP1 trannies. If there is no warranty and you break one, you are shit outta luck.
