I have Knock and Ignition retard monitored on my AEM Serial gauge. If I think I hear knock I check the HI parameter on either. If I see 2v on the Knock or any retard I know I'm knocking.
I was told from a reputable tuner that the oem knock sensor is worthless on a boosted car. It isn't calibrated for the extra noise and gives inaccurate readings.

KIC-SIS

Knock Ionization Current Sensing Ignition Subsystem

http://delphi.com/manufacturers/auto/power...ignsys/ionized/

detects both inaudible knock and audible knock....

and with some nice tricks it is possible to determine not only knock per cylinder but also EGT and A/F per cylinder with out any additional sensors.

bad knock will be audible unless you have a really loud exhaust or something. you'll also feel it not run smooth and buck a little during knock. the factory knock sensor is a good starting point but detecting knock requires all the senses not just reading a sensor. you need to be listening for it, feeling how the car runs under load, and checking the data all at once.

mainly you'll be watching out for knock when playing with the timing when tuning the car. in my experience you'll hit peak power way before there's any real knock to worry about. unless you're just going all out and pushing it to the brink of failure

I just got back from a Motec dealer training seminar on this new knock control module they just released. It's an amazing piece. You literally have control over EVERYTHING, including the frequency that it looks for knock at on your particular motor. That's the big thing that many systems are missing as the resonant frequency for knock is differerent for EVERY setup. Something like a roll cage in 1 car and not in another is enough to completely change the frequency you want to look at.

although the knock box pro (my choice) allows you to do the same thing for tuning on the dyno or street. The Motec knock module is big money even for me and I have a Motec SDL, M800, E888, and SLM. AEM's "knock detection" is a joke it has no ability to distinguish noise from actual knock nor does it have the sample rate to work correctly if it did.

Of course old school reading the plugs still works
