although the knock box pro (my choice) allows you to do the same thing for tuning on the dyno or street. The Motec knock module is big money even for me and I have a Motec SDL, M800, E888, and SLM. AEM's "knock detection" is a joke it has no ability to distinguish noise from actual knock nor does it have the sample rate to work correctly if it did.

Of course old school reading the plugs still works
The knock box is Pro is like $1500 correct?

Something like that I bought it a while ago. Your best bet is to find a tuner using something like that (if they aren't you probably don't want them tuning your car anyway). Even if you are going to tune it yourself you have to consider what is that new engine going to cost if I am knocking and don't know it?

Does the knock box pro tell you which cylinder is knocking and take care of it or just let you listen?

Listen only. Don't get me wrong there's some big time advantages to the motec unit and I will probably eventually have one but you cant install it on every car you tune (with our without an ecu) like the knock box.

There's one called... J&S safegaurd (pretty sure thats the name) that is actually a stand alone unit and operates like the motec one (although without such a high level of control) that you could use with any ecu (even the stock one).

If it were me I'd buy the M800 and the SKM... I have a knock box because I can't convince all my customers

I've never used that one so it's hard for me to say.

That being said, i'd rather see you spend the money on things that are going to prevent knock and help you reach your goals rather than something that's going to tell you that you're done and can't go any further.

Tony, thanks again for taking some time to help this morning. I have a goal set now, all I need to do if figure out a way to write this off at the end of the year and I will send you an order.

For those who do not know about this system (Tony please fill in if I missed any big points) it s a truly adjustable closed loop controller.

(1) Individual Cylinder Detection
(2) Individual Cylinder Frequency and Amplitude Adjustment
(3) Long Term and Short Term Retard Curves
(4) Cylinder Knock Counts
(5) Data Log Actual Knock and Preignition
(6) Knock Amplitude based Variable Retard
(7) Adjustable Time Based Post Event Retard Countdown

Like most motec products unless your going to write an essay your barely scratching the surface. Are you using a MX00 ecu? If so nice choice I'd love to see a writeup on how the knock module if you decide to use it. If your not I'm sure you know you cannot use the knock module. Personally I'd buy a dash and an SLM before I bought anything else a dash and warning light are much more likely to save your engine than a knock module.

From what I can see you are correct, I think they still have head room but they have to have room to grow somewhere.

I will not be using the Motec on this build however if I either get really annoyed with the AEM or come into some extra cash I may break down and go for it.

A dash and SLM are great, but saying it's more likely to save your engine than a knock module is foolish.

The knock module can stop detonation in 1 engine cycle, I don't care what you make the SLM do, you can't beat that.

That being said, the SKM can only be sold by an authorized Motec dealer who has had training on the setup and installation, or a dealer who flys out Motec personel to setup and dial in the SKM. Any authorized dealer is only going to sell the unit with installation and tuning, so the amount the customer knows about the knock module is irrelevant.
