I have to take off the head to change them with my selection of tools. With those recent tools, do you still need compressed air?

You don't have to have to have it, but it sure makes it easy. You can just rotate the crank to get the piston all the way up in the cylinder your working on. I would suggest using air though. It holds the valve up tight and makes the job very easy. I've done several reatainer swap jobs now, and with the tool from kings or eurosport I can do the whole job in about 3 hours without the need for a helper. Standard spring compressor's just don't work well with the heads still on the car. There's just not enough room. If your gonna be doing these get the tool, its worth every penny of the 70$

If it were my car I probably would. The customers cars i've done they only wanted to do the intake side, and i've yet to see any exhaust side retainers with damage. Its really up to you. Personally I wouldn't take the chance, its too easy not to change while your in there.

Cams need to come off. Take off the rockers as well. It is just an easy extra step. Will allow for easier access.

You only want to change the intake retainers.

Is changing the valve seats easy while you are there?

Are you talking about the spring seats? Valve seats are in the combustion chamber that the head of the valve seals to.

If you are just replacing the retainers with ap2 retainers or also replacing the springs with new oem ones, the spring seats wouldn't need to be replaced. The only time you would need to replace the spring seats is if you were changing diameter on the spring or if the springs are wearing out the spring seats, which should be easy to identify.
