After a valve adjustment my car was running pretty crappy. A friend suggested the timing might be off, so I checked, and it seems to me he was right. What do you guys think?
First set of pictures, I've aligned the crank pulley correctly. And the camshafts are one tooth misaligned. Here are the two pictures.
Second rotation, I aligned the two camshafts and the crank pulley is now off.
what’s been done to your car? Has your timing chain ever been off? Just installing a SC kit doesn’t change the timing
Now that our cars are getting older there have been some cases of the rubber cracking/separating from the pulley itself. There are a few threads about how the timing marks weren’t lining up because of their worn out crank pulley. Since you mentioned Comptech I will assume you have an old kit with an older crank pulley so it would be worth closely inspecting yours
After a visit to a dealership for a valve adjustment, the car started to act very weird: smoke and no power. I wonder if they messed with the camshafts? The guy did say "he couldn't see the marks on my camshafts" and thought I had aftermarket ones, which is weird.
Haven't driven it a lot since (maybe 3-5 miles) and recently discovered the misalignment. As I was saying, he car doesn't have any power and it makes weird noises. I do believe that the timing chain was changed at some point, judging from the looks of it.
The marks on the cam idle gear was way off even before you aligned the cams so someone for sure has been messing with it before.
Make sure your crank pulley hasn't separated like in the links above. Probably should remove it and install a "new" one without the additional SC pulley.
The idle gear is the "big wheel" in between the camshaft which has the chain on it, correct?
I see it's not aligned correctly, but that doesn't really matter, as long as the camshafts and crankshaft are aligned, right?
No it doesn't matter as long as the crank and cams are aligned.
Did you double check the valve clearance after you installed the cams?
I'm not good at diagnosing sound from a video but it does sound a bit more noisy than normal.
