If possible, try to use the serial connection. USB is very erratic and only sometimes. Its prob easier to get a serial card.

Do you mean get a serial connection put into the laptop? Could I just use a different usb cable instead of buying the connector?

You need to use the serial cable that came w/ the support tool b/c of a special chip inside, so buy a Belkin serial>usb adapter and you'll be good.
