I am pretty sure Carey broke reduction gears as well, it is another weak point of the stock tranny. I would hate to keep a weak point in my transmission after spending $6000.

U will spend near 8k after all said and done to make your stock trans decent. Not worth it when for 9-10 u can have v160 awesomeness.

Personally, if I was to go the v160 route I'd purchase new. I can't speak for others, but I'm somewhat concerned that the used tranny may have a latent defect that will appear in the near future. If I'm spending $3-4k for a used one, might as well fork over an extra $2k for the piece of mind. I dunno, maybe I'm paranoid.

Deep down inside, I want the V160. But maintenance costs (clutch) may be what deters me the most.

There is a single option for 1300

I think the v160 swap would be much better man. The stock case is still weak and will end up costing you more over going with the v160 when all is said and done. You can get a brand new, with warranty, v160 for $5500 shipped and the v160 conversion kit from FB is like $950. when all is said and done with the v160 swap, you will have spent around $6500. With the install of the PAR gears and everything else, you will probably end up spending at least $6500 ($7500-$8000 with the reduction gear that you really need) and you still have the weak stock case.

I have the PPG set and have had no problems with it but I'd do v160 if I was to do it over for all the reasons realstreet listed. It just wasn't an option when I was putting my build together.

Also lets get this right, straight cut = noisy, helical cut = quiet(er). Neither has anything to do with it being dog engagement or not.

You also need the clutch and some of us can't do the install in their garage. So we'll be paying for space or for someone else to do it.
