Default Part 2 FI reliability on the track

Ok so I greatly appreciate the words of wisdom from my last thread on 0 issues w/ FI....after reading it...I get it.

I got on the track for the first time yesterday and it's no doubt something that I plan on doing very oftern (at least twice a month from Spring to Fall).

So this obviously puts a monkey wrench in my FI plans...or does it?

I'm thinking now if I want to do this I should do the following:

Build the engine 1st
Don't cheap out on the kit
Find someone or someplace local to help check the car after each race
Be prepared for something to break
Be prepared to spend a lot of money (I'm fine w/ spending $15k on kit installed and built motor, plus another $500 - $1000 here and there)

So the question now becomes SOS Supercharger or InlinePro Turbo or Nothing

If you want reliability and you want to race, go SC. Don't even bother considering a turbo. I would stick with a stock motor. Spend the extra $$ on tuning, cooling (bigger radiator), and a clutch upgrade. That should give you a fast, reliable setup. The SOS stage 2 with the either the Hondata K-Pro or AEM EMS looks like a great way to go.

Reliability follows the KISS rule. The more you modify and the further from stock you go, the less reliable it is. SC kits seem to keep everything closer to stock. Turbo kits modify oiling, cooling, intake, and exhaust systems. If the SC belt fails, a supercharger setup is still driveable. If the wastegate fails, the turbo might overboost and destroy your entire motor...

SC setups seem to be for bolt on and go guys who like to spend most of their time driving and enjoying their cars. Turbo guys accept more compromises and are willing to spend a fair amount of time working on their cars. I love my turbo setup, but it's been a few years, multiple revisions, thousands of miles, over $15k, and I'm still working out the bugs. If too much is never enough and breaking parts and rebuilding things is your idea of a good time, go turbo (kind of like Windows). If you want something that just works(like a Mac), go SC.

I know the FI guys and most Honda guys will hate me for this, but a LS376/480 may be the best of both worlds. 480 horsepower, 2 year warranty, and potentially cheaper than a turbo setup.

it's up to you, adding ANYTHING will compromise your reliability over stock. that being said stuff can break stock if you abuse it, it's not like it would only break if you mod it but never break if you leave it stock. the track is a mean place for cars, there will be a problem sooner or later

on one hand I agree with the KISS thing but a quality kit, tuned properly, will be just fine. I think it depends on the power you want to run. under 400whp I'd suggest the SOT eaton based kit. instant full boost anywhere in the powerband, perfect for slower speed corners. camuman on 8psi dyno'd 350whp, that's better than anything else we could find on a dynojet at 8psi. no turbo lag and no waiting till red line for full power. on an AP2 at 5000-6000 rpm you're anywhere from 90-50whp more than a centrifugal based blower kit with the same peak whp.

personally I'd run Mase's turbo kit with his tune, that's what I was going to get for my car before it got jacked. with a properly sized GT30R you'll get plenty of midrange for road racing and it's real efficient. the air to air intercooler will keep things cool on longer sessions and not heat soak like the undersized air to water setups on most supercharger setups will. I'd run that kit and let him know it's for road racing and keep the tune and power levels conservative. unless you're really good 400whp will be more than enough for the track

if you want to build the motor to have some peace of mind it's not a bad idea. I would only build the bottom end, Mase hasn't seen good gains with built heads and has seen some lose power over stock. Laskey has a good reputation and their fully built and assembled bottom ends are very reasonably priced.

I was planning on track days with my S, I'd say keep researching and stay all motor for a while to improve your track skills and find what you think will be the best. whether it's an SOT, SOS, or turbo kit good luck!

I could be wrong (probably ) but I can't think of one person (not a shop) that has successfully and consistently tracked a turbo S2000. There have been a few who've tried in close conjunction with a shop (I think Asura) but I think they eventually went back to SC.

Is Asura still developing their Vmount kit? I PM'd them, but didn't get a response back.

I agree that in that I also haven't seen any "reliable" track driven s2000's, but I think that you need to distinguish between a full blown road race prep'd s2000 driven by a GOOD driver, and someone who is just looking to do some HPDE events. I fall into the latter category, and after having a turbo s2k I don't know if I would ever be happy with a SC'er setup given that I wouldn't be racing the car every weekend.
Not sure about the vmount.
