Don't want to get into an argument, and yes, roughly a Torsen is sorta an LSD kinda, but...

This issue came about because of the confusion about what an LSD is, and what a Torsen is. There is a difference and saying both are LSDs does nothing to dispel the confusion.

put the replacement axle in, got everything bolted back up, and car is drivable again, thanks for the information and help

so what's the deal with the black box that would make it a pain to remove the diff?

The deal is, you get one free with every S2000 bought!

I just replaced a diff and it didn't get in the way.

I believe it is a charcoal canister and is to do with the Low Emissions system. It removes fumes from the fuel line.

If the diff broke and you tried to accelerate in gear it would typically make a ton of noise. At least in all my experience it does.

If it was silent after the break, and the car just free reved in gear, odds are it's an axle.
Sorry to be contrary but my experience was the opposite of this.

When I blew my axle the tripod bit broke but was still around the spline. As such, any engagement of the clutch made a fast clicking noise as the axle turned in the tripod.

Recently my diff started getting noisy and eventually it became very evident it was the diff, but I still drove it into my garage.

Good to hear it was just an axle. I was not so lucky this holiday weekend. Just drained the diff and there's metal everywhere. Anyone have a low mileage ap2 diff for a good price?
