Thumbs down Programmable ECMs

OK, you will have to forgive me on details for this, as I was doing something else while listening to the Speed Channel in the background Friday night.

There was some program on where 2 guys had a new Mustang on a dyno and had a laptop hooked up to the ECM. They were making timing and mixture ratio adjustments on a stock mustang, with only the ECM being upgraded to my knowledge, as I didn't see the first minutes of the program... I wasnt paying too much attention after that until the guy said they took the car from it's stock, upper mid 200 hp to a whopping 502 hp with 506 lbs of torque! WTF? Can an ECM module really double the Horsepower of a car? And if so, where do I sign up?

2 things...

1 - I hope someone else out there saw this program besides me and can comment on what they were really doing to that car. (The car was silver, and to the right of the camera, the guy tuning was on the left with the laptop and the two old farts hosting the show were in the middle... Oh yeah, and one of them was all excited and getting a kick out of pushing the gas in the car for the dyno runs.... how cheezy!)

2 - Does anyone in here have knowledge of ECMs and what is available for 04 - 05 models? What kind of power do they actually make?

ECMs don't make power, and they certainly don't make 300hp.

I expect if you had watched the show a bit closer there was probably a bloody great supercharger or something on the engine and the ECM was there to tune for it.

Same goes with the S. Just adding an ECM or piggyback won't make power. You can sometimes override some of the stock ECMs overly cautios settings but the S doesn't have a lot of these. It's pretty well maxed.

Plus bloody big exhaust system with high flow cats, giant throttle body, better intake manifold, headers and I wouldn't doubt there was some laughing gas thrown in there somewhere.

I recall seeing something similar on an episode of HorsePower TV and that's what they did to their Mustang.

I wish I had paid closer attention to the show. What I do know is that there definatley was a stock exhaust on the car. Didn't sound at all like there had been any mod. That was why I didnt really pay attention in the first place. If it had a bunch of mods on it, I would have been more interested in what they were doing... They were just mapping out the timing, mixture, etc through the powerband.

I guess it's another unsolved mystery....

Like he said, it's and "UNSOLVED MYSTERY".

There is a very plain and boring explanation for this. It's either extensive mods or just TV bullshit. As the solution to the mystery is to 'watch more TV' I don't really see the point.

maybe they put a DC Sports header and HKS exhaust on that thing. The gains are just about in the ballpark of these 2 products for the S.
