Pump Gasoline Comparison
Has anybody done any dyno testing or possible research into which pump gasoline is the best, out of the premium unleaded brands that are offered.
What kind of gas do you guys use? Have you ever had any detonation or pinging problems? No start problems or slow start problems?
It would also help if you posted where you are located since different parts of the country offer different brands and types of gas.
I have always used BP 92 or 93 octane depending on the station. I am located in Kansas City. I have never had any problems while using it but then I also have never done any dyno testing or datalogging to compare it to any other brands.

There was one study a few years back (I am not going to look for it) that did a test of premium fuel from the major gas stations....in every category, Shell was #1.
Honestly, I use any premium 93 I can find, as long as it's a reputable gas station. Many gas stations are sloppy, and if the tanker accidentally fills their holding tanks with 87 in the 93 tank, they will just leave it. I've personally seen it kill an s2000 for this exact reason.

Was this study posted on s2ki? I did a search but all I could find was "highest hp on pump gas."
Is there anything you could do legally if a gas station had the wrong octane in their holding tanks and it causes catastrophic damage?
A local tuner informed me that some of the 93 octane gas available is actually not usable octane because they just add more ethanol. I am not quite sure why that would make it "unusable."
I read on honda-tech that a lot people use Shell V-Power gas.

in a larger city. There shouldn't be any power difference unless the tune accounts for the higher octane right? The closest Shell station is 20 miles from me and only carries 91. Oh well.
Different states and different stations carry different octane rated gas. In Kansas City I know of multiple places that carry 92 or 93. But I have heard of stations in California that carry 100 octane race gas at the pump, that would be real nice to have.

In Missouri they can legally add up to 10% Ethanol without disclosing anything to the customer. Many station use what we think of as standard 87 and add the Ethanol to up the octane point.
Chris, you can go to Apple Mart in Grain Valley and get, Ethanol, 100 oct, 110 oct..... at the pump. Also in our area Shell stations are independent and get their fuel from Groendyke just like everyone else. The key is to find a station with high volume so that the tanks are regularly drained and filled and the fuel does not sit for extended periods of time. All of the Quick Trips in the area are very clean and many of the BP's are in good shape and carry 93.

Just add a Gallon or two of Xylene to every tank, its 117 Octane
1 Gallon per tank will yield 94.6 or so Octane and Two Gallons will bring it up to 98, (this is based off of 93 and though it can get expensive, not a bad idea if you want to take the car to the track or plan on running the car hard on a nice weekend.
