Return Line Question
how is it that people situate their return lines to empty into the exhaust manifold side of the oil pan? ive tested how oil sits in the oil pan considering how it sits on the car, and with even 4 quarts of oil, oil is on the verge of spilling out of the pan on that side. i dont see how, with 5 quarts especially but even with 4 quarts, it would be possible for oil to actually drain into the pan from that side. any insight would be greatly appreciated.
it is a pain in the ass only because you need a right angle drill and a reduced shank drill bit and the bit needs to be cut and re machined by a machine shop in order for the drill and bit to fit between the frame and the motor.
other than that it's just drill straight through, tap with an expensive 1/2" npt tap, and clean the shit out of everything before re-installing. espically the surfaces of where the oil pan meets the motor, to make sure there are no leaks...because it sucks to fill the motor with oil just to find there is a leak, and have to pull the pan again, wasting the $50 you just spent on synthetic oil
btw the correct sized drill bit is 45/64, but it is hard to find. my local hardware store had an 11/16 bit that was only a couple hundreths smaller. and the tap still ran through fine,

We just pulled the pan off, and drilled/tapped the girdle with it on the car. We were able to catch all the shavings from the back side because the pan was off.
If you are wanting to weld on a fitting, that would probably be a PITA with it on the car.
