Default Shaft play

How much shaft play is allowed for a gt3076r. I obviously have some, and I think my turbine is just barely touching the housing. There is a VERY VERY SLIGHT contact mark all the way around where the wheel is. It's uniform all the way around. Does this mean my turbo is kapoot?

Also, what causes shaft play. Any information is appreciated.

Wheel seems fine. I haven't pulled the turbo yet. I'm posting pics tonight so gimme a sec. The shaft play isn't very much and there is no in and out play.

I have used turbo's in the past with a little side to side. In and out shaft play is the worst. In and out means rebuild is needed. Is there oil in the turbo? Even a brand new turbo when there is no oil pressure or anything in it will have some side to side shaft play. Once installed and ran the shaft play will go away.

Im not too sure about a BB turbo but with a JB turbo, you could have up to .014" axial shaft play and this is normal with dry seals. Once oil is pumped into the CHRA and the seals swell back up, the axial play will drop to around .007" and this is also normal and about where it should be.

It's got oil inside.

How exactly does oil pressure work when u turn the car off. I may be turning it off too quickly after spooling it.

The only time I hear anything from it is when I've spooled it good in the last minute or 2 and turn it off. Then I hear a slight whistling sound.

Does it lose oil pressure when I turn the car off? That could make the shaft play enough to allow it to rub the sidewall?

Yes, as soon as you turn the car off, you lose oil pressure to the turbo. The oil seals will stay swelled up though for days and the shaft play should stay minimal until they dry out over time. If you see oil in the turbine housing or the compressor housing, then the seals are bad and you need a rebuild, BB turbo's are expensive to rebuild and one reason with I stay with JB.
