To help anyone else who might have the same problem, what were the symptoms as far as how it affected the way the engine would run?

the fuel pressure guage was very sporadic. we got a base map at 8lbs and it was fine, then once he went to 12lbs the fuel pressure would plummet. this time it was fine. so just to note that it was definitely the pump.
