if its particle board it will swell when it gets wet no doubt about it if it if has a couple of coats of paint on them they still are not sealed. to get them to last a long time I would brush on a few coats of polyurethane (you can pick it up at Home depot for a few bucks also then paint them black and they will hold much longer.

Not trying to jack the thread but i have done a lot of wood work in my car stereo years.

Looks good for being so inexpensive.

Good Suggestion

No swelling yet so far after a month... I think I may follow your suggestion though and do a layer. Thanks for the expertise
