Shift Knob Purpose: to increase the "resolution" of the gears so that it is MUCH harder to miss gears, or otherwise screw up the transmission. I can shift just fine, and plenty fast with it... the goal is to save the tranny. The throw is unimportant. and yes, it is nicer having your arm at the same level as it would be when steering, rather than reaching down to shift.
I was just as closed-minded as everyone else when ifirst used it in my other car, but its grown on me, and i am much much happier wiht it now...
