i'll eventually smooth everything out, so this is just a temporary mockup. still, it's a very nice placement, and it's actually angled towards the driver and in full view, even when your left hand is on the wheel.
i'm probably going to shave the two right top buttons, but keep the vol control, which i'll be using that for my e-cutout.
it IS possible to not damage anything, but you would have to fabricate a main case and cover for the gauge. you don't damage any electronics, but you do disconnect and remove it.
my S is kinda beat up aesthetically, so i don't really mind tearing apart things...that crack was from me trying to pull off the cover without removing the start button first.

i'll post back when i smooth it all out with body filler, before and after i add the gauge and radar control.
1 month or so.
