"The Greats" s2k collage
Let's go ahead and NOT talk about the "car scene".
BUT to address your qualms about the definition of a build, take it this way. imagine building a model airplane from scratch. You bought all the little parts to put it together. You put your blood sweat and tears into it. You put tons of time into it and when it's done, you can truly say that you built it and you can say it with a sense of pride.
Then, along comes a kid with a stick together kit, parts preassembled. He throws it together in 15 minutes and calls it a build. Is there any sense of occasion? Any sense of accomplishment?
From the outside, they look the same. But the effort that is put into one vs the other is substantially different. To replace coilovers and throw on a body kit is not a build. If that's a build, you might as well consider changing your oil a build. I mean, you put in new oil. Shit maybe you even upgraded to synthetic. WOW while you're at it, swap out them wiper blades! Man this build is getting serious!
see how ridiculous that is? It's probably a moot point, but from a guy who is really building a car, it boils my blood to hear people say stupid crap like "I have such a sick build!" when all it is is coils/bags, wheels and wrap. Congratulations. You're basically a scenester volkswagen owner.
I do not consider my car a build. its modded. modding is buying after market parts and pieces and changing them out to accomplish a form and function. a build is being creative and fabing your ideas to achieve that form and function you can't get with aftermarket effects. that's the difference. does this help clarify the difference?
OMG this is getting good; this thread is something we would see on those dumbas# S2000 Talk and Tech pages on Facebook. I feel like this contagion is spreading to S2KI now. I know the flu vaccine is now available can S2KI please get the vaccine to stop the spread of bagging, over lowering, over cambering, wheels to wide that they are destroying the chassis, cusco roll cages, and the difference between bought not built. Frankenstook is built and many others, but most of our cars are bought not built.
Lol.
Next time, title your collage as "TeH InStAgRaamZz GrEatZ" so we won't misinterpret your intent. Wouldn't want you to think we're not about the "car scene" and all.
Edit: Sorry, that was unfair. I kind of feel like the whole instagram thing is killing car culture these days in this country. I think it's turned owning and modding a car from something that was more enthusiast-centric, to a big popularity contest. Who can have the widest wheels? Who has the biggest wing? Who's car looks most aggressive? It's all getting kind of silly.
I mean, look at your collage. Nothing really strikes me as original except John Paul's car (bagged, boosted, wrapped), Hanzel's car (Mugen catalog car, done exceptionally well) and Punoi's car (body stripped down, flared out by hand, custom color, tons of fab, etc). Everything else is just another S2000 with an expensive body kit, slammed, on wheels. Some of these cars have bolt-ons, some of them have bolt-in cages, etc., but it's almost like they all followed the "hype-beast instagram S2000 build checklist" and, IN MY OPINION, that kinda sucks.
Originality, and an eye for execution and quality is starting to get rarer and rarer with this scene today. In my opinion, the best builds that I have seen are the ones that generally don't get whored out on instagram, aren't getting reposted everywhere, aren't covered in "STANCESTANCESTANCE" banners because their owners didn't build these cars for instagram likes, but because they are TRUE enthusiasts and appreciate the cars for what they're worth.

But the thing is, it's all about the car scene, right?. Not whether or not you fabricated your own f@#kin valve springs & exhaust. It's about being into these cars, dropping priorities, going negative into credit to do what you love, or hone a passion. At least..
