Mantis Shrimp Photos
we had a small one in our tank, I believe it came in some rock we picked up in the tide pools or maybe bought at the pet store... it was about the size of my pinky... even that small everytime it would clack its claws it sounded like a snap of a finger

Beautiful little critter. Be very careful handling them. Their front claws can hit with the force of a .22 bullet and do some real damage. I've seen them break aquarium glass more than once.

Its about 6 inches or so, probably near full length. They have been known to break aquarium glass and also have some of the most advanced eye-sight known to man. He is not in a reef tank, just in a tank with some live rock and a chalk bass ( who probably wont make it very long
) Im looking forward to seeing him tear up some hermit crabs!

I caught a 10 inch one night fishing here a few years ago - freaked me out since I didn't know what it was at the time. Then I did some research and found out more about them. There are actually 2 variations on the front arms - one is for clubbing and the other is a spearing type - either way those arms are FAST!
Since then I have seen them often while scuba diving - I still stay away from their holes in the sand.

A little known fact about mantis shrimp is that they have more retinal pigments (11) than any other animal known, including humans (3 - 4).
