$225 per wheel is pretty high If they do a great job it might be worth it.

I have my AP2 wheels at the shop right now getting powdercoated. I only paid $45 per wheel and that includes sandblast, powder, clearcoat, paint match plastic center caps, and powdercoat for all the lugs. This is not a chrome color but it is very nice powder. The color I am getting is called "Soft Rub Bronze". It is pretty close to black with a bronze metallic flake in it. I will post pics next week when I get them done

well that finish is not a regular finish. For black chrome the price sounds about right.
Huh???

I had no idea that it cost that much. That is a black chrome plating then? Or is it powdercoat finish? The shop that I am having do my wheels showed me a set of wheels they did in black chrome powder and they said it would be about $100 per wheel max.

its a powdercoat finish. That place does everything though, polishing, chroming, etc.. but that page I linked was chrome and black chrome powdercoat. I'm playing with the idea of getting my volks done, I don't think i've seen any ce28's in either of those finishes yet.

Unlike paint, there is no difference for powdercoat pricing. Powdercoat is all within a few bucks of each other($18-$25 a pound) and labor is exactly the same. Black chrome shouldnt cost more than sh!t brown. The only difference is the price of the powder, which for 4 wheels, would be about a 1/4 pound of powder, so it should cost you AT MOST $6 dollars more.

That is what I thought too. The place I am using said that it is a little more difficult to get the chrome powders even and looking good so they charge more just in case they have to do it over again Seems like the shop should eat the cost if they don't do a good job though. But $225 per wheel is insane unless it is actual chrome plating. I don't even know if that is a good price for plating. I have never priced that

Where are you located? Shipping wheels can get pricey. You should be able to find a place that is pretty close to this price. I have found places from $45/wheel all the way to $95/wheel.

I am located in Central Oregon. There are quite a few places over here that are around this price. The reason I got all this done at this price is becase they give a discount if you are in a car club This shop also said that they can match Mugen Bronze almost perfectly This has been a concern in the past for some folks.

If you still want the contact info for this shop just PM me

The black chrome im talking about is a process called sputtering chrome. Not they hyper black powder coat.

Thanks for the clarification. This makes much more sense. The "PVD" process has been around for quite a long time, but has been used primarily in the making of IC's (Integrated Chips). This can be a very costly process since the machines to do this cost a butt load of money. Obviously there is less of a need to be perfect in coating wheels then there is for IC's but a "sputter" machine in the semi-conductor industry can cost upwards of $2 million or more I am sure that the "sputter" machines they use for wheels are far less sophisticated but I am sure are still expensive.

Thanks,

Brandon
