I was looking at the shiftknob surround on my car and it seemed weird to me that it was black plastic when it would flow a lot better if it matched the aluminum trim on the console. So, I bought an extra one (cheap, only $12 new) sanded off the texture, primered it and had a friend of mine paint a faux brushed aluminum finish on it. the paint matches the existing trim really well IMHO.
