Dude I have mine installed where you wanted to install it and you don't even notice it. The reception is perfect. Whoever told you about the XM bulletin was feeding you hot air. You can even place it in the secret compartment and get reception. Trust me I know, my cousin owns a stereo shop and installs these all day long. I would take it back and have them do it right. It looks hideous where they put it.
Here is a pic:

My friend mounted the reciever in his Scion like this. No problems whatsoever.

I tried mine on the inside of the trunk lid, and that didn't work. I live in BFE with no ground based repeaters anywhere, so reception is flaky in anything but on top of the car.

And yes, XM advises against in car placement. When you go to activate your radio online before you do it it tells you that if the antenna is not on the outside of the vehicle to take it back to the installer immediately.

As others have mentioned, this will not be as much of an issue with a soft-top car. Metal blocks signals. Vinyl does not.

Ultra-high frequency signals which XM uses (2+GHZ) are in no way interferred with by plastic or vinyl.

I agree, I'm just stating that an installer may just see that warning and advise a customer that way, or a customer who isn't electronics saavy may see that and think the installer messed up.

Also, I stated that because it was said that a warning like that was installer B.S.
